December Highlights

The season of Advent continues this month! More than enjoying delicious Advent Calendar chocolates and treats, Advent is a time of prayerfully anticipating and preparing for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. Increasing prayer practices, such as praying with an Advent Wreath in your home or attending Mass more regularly, are simple practices to ready our hearts and homes for Christmas. Family Prayer Booklets for Advent are still available; please contact Alexandria Fung at:

Baptismal Preparation

Baptism is a sacrament of welcome into the family of God and our parish community, “where the ‘I believe’ of Baptism is married to the ‘we believe’ of the whole Church” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 166-167). The preparation process is an opportunity to build community among families at similar life stages and with the wider parish. Baptisms are celebrated within the context of the Sunday Eucharist. We are forming a team of "mentor families" who have recently celebrated the baptism of their child(ren) to join our Baptism Preparation Team. To join, please contact:

Let's Chat and Play

Parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children up to and including six years of age are invited to drop in for playtime from 1:30PM – 3:30PM on Wednesdays at St. John the Divine Parish (390 Base Line Road West). If you know of a family with young children, please invite them to drop in to get to know other young families in our community. To support this initiative, please contact Rod Tramble at

Liturgy of the Word with Children

During the celebration of Sunday Mass at 10AM at St. John the Divine Parish (390 Base Line Road West), children ages four to six are invited to participate in catechetical activities while their families or caregivers attend Mass. Activities include prayer, songs, and crafts related to the Sunday Gospel reading. To get involved, please contact Alexandria Fung at

Sacrament Preparation with School-Aged Children

The preparation of school-aged children to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation is best accomplished when home, school, and parish work collaboratively. In collaboration with parents and the local Catholic school, the parish is responsible for immediate preparation, which “involves catechetical and practical preparation in the weeks and months leading up to the reception of a particular sacrament” (Ontario Catholic Elementary Curriculum Policy Document for Religious Education, Grades 1 – 8, 34).
